Taking the recommended dosage of Provigil

Provigil refers to a drug which is used for treating unusual sleepiness in individuals suffering from the following medical conditions:

  • Sleep apnea or hypopnea syndrome
  • Shift work sleep disorder

You must be detected with any of the sleep disorders before being prescribed Provigil, for sleepiness might be a sign of some other forms of illnesses.

It should be remembered that Provigil does not provide a cure to any individual affected with sleep disorder. It just treats some of the symptoms associated with sleepiness. Provigil (Modafinil) should not be administered in lieu of getting adequate sleep. You must adhere to your doctor's recommendations on maintaining better sleeping habits.

Provigil, similar to other forms of stimulants can be abused. The drug can help in altering your mood, thinking, perception, feelings and may provide an artificial elevated feeling thus leading to growing dependence. Make sure to take Provigil in the prescribed dose only. Do not increase or decrease the dose without consulting with a doctor.

Available dosage and administration

Before you take the earliest dose of Provigil you must remember to share all information to your doctor regarding the prescription drugs, over-the-counter as well as herbal medications you have been taking in the past. Do tell your doctor if you have any blood pressure, heart, liver or kidney problems. You must not suppress any fact regarding any form of mental disorder you have suffered or any stimulant medication you had taken.

Your Provigil (Modafinil) dosage recommended by your doctor will vary. This will be dependent on your age, certain medical conditions which you may be suffering from, and different medications you are taking. As mentioned above, you must not adjust the dosing till your doctor gives specific instructions regarding that.

The normal recommended dosage of Provigil is 200 mg once everyday (for any form of approved use). For treating sleep apnea or narcolepsy, the dose has to be administered first thing in the morning. For those individuals suffering from shift work sleep disorder, the dose of the medicine must be taken one hour prior to starting the work shift.

A lower dose of Provigil, which is 100 mg per day, can be advised for people with heart ailments, liver or kidney disease and also for elderly patients.

Provigil comes in the form of a tablet and needs to be taken with water, preferable a full glass. It may either be taken with food or without food. Generally food does not lower the effectiveness of the drug, but can delay Provigil's absorption by one hour. If you feel that Provigil is bothering your stomach, do try to take the medicine with food. In case you are unsure about something related to the Provigil dosage, do ask your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. If you accidentally miss a Provigil dose, do take it the moment you remember. If you forget the dose till the very next day, do skip that dose which you missed and revert to your usual schedule. Remember not to take a double Provigil dose.

Provigil must be kept in the original container, tightly closed and away from children's reach. It must be stored at room temperature, away from sunlight or moisture.

Patients must always stick to the dosage pattern as recommended by their healthcare provide, though accidental overdose does not produce life threatening symptoms. The general symptoms associated with Provigil overdose are:

  • Agitation
  • Aggressiveness
  • Anxiety
  • Diarrhea
