Provigil

Provigil medication is basically the brand name for the generic analeptic drug Modafinil. With its use, there is increased release of monoamines, especially the catecholamines norepinephrine and dopamine, in the central nervous system. Modafinil is also known to elevate the hypothalamic histamine levels. This has led to a few researchers concluding that Modafil is actually an agent promoting wakefulness, unlike the general stimulants like amphetamine.

Indications

Before initiating the treatment for excessive sleepiness, careful attention should be paid to treating the underlying causes leading to the sleep disorders. Provigil should be used adjunctively with standard treatments for the underlying causes of excessive sleepiness. Thus if the sleep disorder is due to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), maximum effort should be given for treating the condition of OSA with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), before starting with Provigil.

Dosage

Provigil is recommended at 200 mg per day, which is to be administered once. For the treatment of narcolepsy and obstructive sleep apnea, Provigil should be administered once at the beginning of the day. Those patients with shift work sleep disorder should take Provigil about one hour before starting the work shift. Dosage of Provigil is dependent on your present medical condition, as well as the response to treatment. Though 400mg/per day single dose has been given with no significant adverse effects, there is no solid evidence to prove that the extra dose confers any additional benefit.

In rare cases, addiction to Provigil has been reported. You must not increase your dosage; consume the drug more often or for a longer duration than has been prescribed. Do stop taking Provigil when told by the doctor.
